Indications & Dosage
INDICATIONS
Ritalin, along with Ritalin-SR, can be recommended for the treatment of:
- Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) in children patients aged six and over and adults
- Narcolepsy
DOSAGE AND ADMINISTRATION
Pretreatment Screening
Before treating children and adults taking central nervous system (CNS) stimulants, such as Ritalin or Ritalin-SR, check the presence of any cardiac diseases (i.e., conduct careful medical history, including the family medical history, sudden death or ventricular arrhythmias, and physical examination) (see WARNINGS and precautions for more information].
Evaluate the dangers of abuse before prescribing and watch for signs of abuse or dependence during treatment. Keep meticulous prescription records, inform patients about the dangers of abuse, look for signs of abuse or overdose, and frequently review the need for Ritalin or Buying ritalin online-SR dosage [see BOX WARNINGS Warnings and Precautions, Drug Abuse and Dependence].
General Dosing Information
Ritalin Tablets
Pediatric Patients 6 Years and older
Begin with 5 mg taken in a daily dose orally (before eating breakfast or lunch). Gradually increase the dosage by increments of 5 to 10 mg per week. A dosage that is more than 60 mg daily is not recommended.
Adults
A typical dose is between 20 and 30 mg per day. In divided doses, take orally every 2 or 3 days at least 30 to 45 minutes before meals. The maximum daily dose of 60 milligrams. Patients who cannot sleep when taking medication at night should finish their dose by 6 p.m.
Ritalin-SR Tablets
Ritalin-SR tablets provide a duration of action that is approximately 8 hours. Thus, Ritalin-SR tablets can be substituted for Ritalin tablets if the 8-hour dose of Ritalin-SR corresponds to the titrated eight-hour dose of Ritalin. Ritalin-SR tablets need to be taken whole and not chewed or crushed.
Treatment with pharmacological methods for ADHD could be required for long periods. It is important to periodically review the long-term use of Ritalin and Ritalin-SR and alter dosage as required.
Dose Reduction And Discontinuation
If symptoms worsen paradoxically and other reactions are observed, decrease the dose or, if needed, discontinue Ritalin and Ritalin-SR. If no improvement is observed after an appropriate dose adjustment for one month, then the medication should be stopped.
